56 Bhog

One of the most delicious Prasadam people look forward to. Do you know the history behind it?

Lord Indra (the Lord of rain) once out of a conflict started pouring continuous heavy rains in Gokul. Lord Krishna then held the “Govardhan Parvat” on his little finger for a continuous period of 7 days to protect his devotees and members of the region. It is not only the humans but the animals also who took shelter under this Parvat(mountain).

As an expression of gratitude and compensation to 8 meals (8 prehar) per day that Shri Krishna missed, the villagers of Gokul arranged for 56 food items and served him the feast. Ever since then started the ritual of “Chappan Bhog” that includes variety of food items- sweets, snacks, dairy products, meals, panchamrit etc.

Jai Shri Krishna!!
