Out of many a things that customer service has taught me one is the right use of words at right time. we often don’t look into deep meaning of words and use them as synonyms blindly. One such common mistake that we do is in using of word “help” and “assist”. They mean absolutely same for you right? So did they mean to me until I understood that when you actually use the word” help” you mean that the person is incapable of doing a task on his own, while when you use the word “assist” it means that you understand that the person is capable of doing things on his own but he might need an aid to accomplish his task or may be need certain guidance. By saying “may I assist you” you just lead a hand that would act as a support and not come across as creating dependency.
The inspiration to write this blog came through a conversation with my friend, where he said “why don’t you pity others and I quickly said I don’t like pitying others but I rather appreciate blessing others” and it is only after I completed my sentence did I realize what it meant. We often end up assisting others thinking that they are incapable but while we assist others we should always remember to be a supporting hand and take a step forward to make other person feel more confident and not miserable.
Choose your words and acts, little consciousness may make you wiser.
