gold, treasure of value or thoughts

As part of weekly ritual I visited Gurudwara Bangla Sahib today, I observed that the stand of the fan was painted with gold color, it surely looked beautiful with the color combination and the work on it but it put me in a question that I was unable to answer. What is the exact reason and significance of everything being in gold around the Guru or God whom you worship, first thought that came to my limited mind was that why adding materialistic value to God when he himself conveys us to be non materialistic. Its then that I decided that once I reach home I will Google the characteristics of gold as I could recall just few from my childhood studies. I also asked mom, why is it that we put gold all around God? How does gold help us in daily lives. When I Googled I found out that it was a least reactive metal, it stays in its normal form in many conditions where other metals don't, its a good conductor of electricity. Its ash is also used for medicinal values. In India it also works as reserve and is used as a last resort of recovery from crisis. God plays the same role for us in our lives. Right? Having been said that I have my on apprehensions of adding gold to treasures of any religious place. Why can't we all learn to adopt such characteristics and rather invest money in adding happiness to under privileged. It was imperative for me to bring something positive out of my observation as I have often said that even the most negative situation has something positive in it.
