All of us have a different outlook to life and that is what decides how we react to others problems. While most of us like to listen to them and form our own opinions and give instant views, some of us just prefer to stay quiet. The same way round many would just want to be listened quietly while some would look for your input. While some would look for sympathy some would want empathy. I really can’t guide on how to judge what the person wants but yes you may judge it by the conversation and what seems to be carrying your conversation and relieving the other person.
No matter how and what you talk, but if you really care for a person always empathize with her/him and not sympathies, for sympathy might seem to be giving temporary relive but it leaves a person weak later, it lesser the confidence of a person and make her feel hopeless, while when you empathize with a person you may end up giving her right solutions and aid them re build confidence, selection of words is most important when you deal with a person who feels low, never show a person as to what is it that the person is losing, rather always reflect what can be gained, and if not gained just make the person understand that its just a phase of life and it would pass by.
Be a good listener and not a judge, that’s the only way you can support unconditionally,
